Education / Mentoring

Workshop facilitator, We Speak
I am a freelance facilitator for We Speak, which works with young people and professionals who don’t feel confident speaking in front of groups. I co-lead and facilitate workshops in person and online, and help train volunteer mentors from partnering companies.

Part-time Lecturer, Department of Communication Studies, University of Guyana, Guyana
I lectured at the University of Guyana from January 2018 to June 2019. I lectured (and organised guest lecturers) on courses including ‘Reporting & Writing: Basic News & Features’, ‘Reporting and Writing: In-depth Journalism’, ‘Reporting and Writing/Tier 3: Specialised Journalism: (Science, Health, Climate Change and Environment)’, as well as facilitating seminars.

Sub-editor, Africa Utopia Fashion Journalism course, Southbank Centre
I acted as sub-editor on the Southbank centre’s inaugural fashion journalism course in September 2016, working with trainees to ensure their work was ready on deadline and discussing any edits/changes with them. I was present on the final day, when we wrapped up production on the resulting magazine, Dual.

Co-workshop leader, Word On The Street, Poached Creative/The Pavement Magazine
As deputy editor of The Pavement, a free magazine for homeless people in London and Scotland, I helped facilitate workshops and writing sessions as part of our outreach journalism programme. Entitled Word On The Street, we worked with Poached Creative to run a four-week introduction to journalism course for would-be journalists with experience of homelessness.

The writers’ work was published in The Pavement, and some workshop participants have gone onto become regular writers for the magazine and other publications. Visiting journalist Veronique Mistiaen write about the workshops on her blog The Right Human.

Media Day guest teacher, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, Birmingham
I was invited to be a guest teacher at a media day for high school students at King Edward VI Camp Hill School. I led a group of about 20 students in a day-long session, focusing on online media, which included assigning roles, giving tips on interviewing, managing students coming and going, assisting with the production of an online newspaper/blog, and steering the students through to completion. At the end of the day I participated in a Q&A session.

Media Day guest teacher, Lampton School, London
I assisted at a special two-day media course held at Lampton School in Hounslow, West London, in July 2015. This involved supervising and assisting students in a dedicated ‘media truck’ to produce a special-edition school newspaper.
